You've barely reached the summit before you're already looking forward to the descent – and planning your next climb. That's exactly what makes an E-MTB hardtail one of the most popular mountain bikes today. Powerful mid-drive motors and battery capacities of 600 Wh or more make it easy to reach trails and forest roads that would be far more demanding on a conventional mountain bike. Compared to an E-fully, a hardtail E-bike is lighter, requires less maintenance, and usually costs less. From entry-level models with 100 mm of travel to capable trail hardtails and versatile SUV e-bikes with racks and lights, there's an option for every type of rider. The right choice depends on suspension travel, motor, and where you ride.

Why choose an E-MTB hardtail?

  • More range: Battery capacities from around 400 to 800 Wh support everything from after-work rides to full-day adventures.
  • Less maintenance: No rear shock and no suspension linkage mean less maintenance and lower long-term costs.
  • Better value: With the same budget, you'll typically get higher-quality components than on a comparable E-fully.

Types of E-MTB hardtail bikes

E-MTB hardtails may all use mid-drive motors, but they're designed for very different riding styles. Suspension travel, tire width, and components determine whether a bike is best suited to sporty trail riding, longer off-road tours, or everyday commuting with racks and lights. That's why your intended riding style is the best place to start when choosing the right model.

Cross-country & touring E-hardtails – Versatile all-rounders

Cross-country and touring E-hardtails are the entry point to the world of electric mountain biking. Suspension forks with 100-120 mm of travel, mostly 29-inch wheels, aluminum frames, and powerful mid-drive motors with around 85 Nm of torque make them ideal for moderate trails and longer rides. Batteries of 500 Wh and above are now standard.d.

Trail E-hardtails – Built for technical trails

Trail E-hardtails are the sportier option. With 120-130 mm of travel, wide knobby tires, and either 27.5-inch or 29-inch wheels, they're built for more demanding terrain. Many models also come equipped with a dropper post as standard. They're the ideal choice if you regularly ride technical trails but don't need a full-suspension bike.

SUV E-bikes – Built for every ride

SUV E-bikes combine the off-road capability of an E-MTB with the everyday practicality of a trekking e-bike. Suspension forks and knobby tires handle gravel roads and trails, while racks, lights, and fenders make commuting just as easy. Many models support a maximum system weight of up to 150 kg, making them an excellent choice for riders who split their time between weekday commutes and weekend adventures.

How to choose the right E-MTB hardtail

Choosing the right E-MTB hardtail comes down to three questions: Where do you ride? How far do you want to go? And how much trail capability do you need? A daily commuter has different priorities than someone tackling alpine tours or technical singletrack. Motor performance, battery capacity, suspension travel, wheel size, and practical features all influence how a bike rides.

What battery capacity do I need?

For commuting and relaxed after-work rides, 400-500 Wh is usually enough. If you're planning long tours or full days on the trails, 600-800 Wh is the better choice. With up to 800 Wh, many modern E-MTB hardtails now offer excellent range. As a general rule, a larger battery gives you more range but also adds weight. Our E-bike battery guide explains what affects range and how to choose the right battery for your riding.

How much torque do I need?

For moderate rides on flatter terrain, 50-70 Nm of torque is usually sufficient. If you regularly tackle steep climbs or hilly terrain, look for 80 Nm or more. Trail hardtail E-bikes often deliver 85 Nm or even over 100 Nm, giving you the extra support you need on demanding climbs. You can narrow down your options using the Torque filter.

Should I choose a Bosch, Shimano, or Yamaha motor?

The motor is one of the biggest differences between electric hardtail mountain bikes. Bosch offers the widest range of drive systems and an extensive service network. Yamaha motors are known for their excellent value, while Shimano systems are found on both sporty trail bikes and versatile SUV models. Our E-bike motor guide explains the strengths of each system in more detail. You can also filter bikes by Drive Unit Brand to compare your options.

Should I choose 29-inch or 27.5-inch wheels?

29-inch wheels roll over obstacles more easily and have become the standard, especially for taller riders and longer rides. 27.5-inch wheels are more agile and better suited to smaller frame sizes or playful trail setups. Use the Wheel Size filter to find the right option.

What's the difference between an E-hardtail and an E-fully?

An E-mountain bike hardtail uses a suspension fork up front, while a full-suspension E-bike adds rear suspension for improved traction and comfort. As a result, E-hardtails are lighter, require less maintenance, and are generally more affordable, but they demand more from the rider on rough terrain. If maximum traction and descending performance are your priorities, an E-fully is the better choice. For commuting, touring, or getting started with mountain biking, an E-hardtail is often the more practical option.

Do I need a dropper post?

A dropper post lets you lower your saddle from the handlebar at the push of a button, making descents and technical terrain easier to ride. It's now standard on many trail hardtail electric bikes and can easily be added to many touring models. Use the Seatpost filter to find bikes equipped with a dropper post.

How much does a good hardtail E-bike cost?

Solid entry-level models start at around €2,000, typically with a Bosch mid-drive motor, a 500 Wh battery, and an aluminum frame. Higher-end touring and trail electric hardtail mountain bikes generally range from €3,500 to €5,000, offering larger batteries, lighter components, and premium drivetrains. For regular trail riding, the mid-range often delivers the best balance of performance and value.
