What drives Schwalbe: Innovation and sustainability

The Schwalbe brand is part of Ralf Bohle GmbH, based in Reichshof near Cologne, Germany. Founded as a family business in 1922, the company's second generation launched the Schwalbe brand in 1973. Development, testing, recycling operations, and administration are all based in Reichshof. Tires and tubes are manufactured at Schwalbe's production facility in Vietnam, which is operated as a joint venture with Korean partner Hung-A. Schwalbe is just as committed to recycling as it is to tire development: the world's first tube recycling program launched in 2015, followed in 2022 by the first comprehensive tire recycling process, developed together with TH Cologne and Pyrum Innovations. Today, the recovered Carbon Black (rCB) produced through this process is used in the majority of Schwalbe tires.

Schwalbe technologies – From ADDIX to Clik Valve

Schwalbe approaches tire design as a system of interconnected technologies: carcass, compound, puncture protection, and valve. Every component is developed and tested in Schwalbe's in-house laboratory in Reichshof before it reaches production. The result is a clearly structured technology platform that delivers the right combination for every type of riding – from XC race tires engineered for minimum rolling resistance to city and touring tires with patented puncture protection. These technologies define today's Schwalbe lineup.

ADDIX – Schwalbe's compound system

ADDIX is Schwalbe's compound system, developed specifically for MTB, road, gravel, and touring tires. In the MTB segment, four compounds cover the full spectrum of riding styles: Speed for XC racing with reduced rolling resistance, SpeedGrip as the most versatile all-rounder for XC, trail, and all-mountain riding, Soft with enhanced damping for enduro and downhill, and Ultra Soft for maximum grip in demanding gravity terrain. ADDIX Race is used for road and gravel tires, while touring and city models feature ADDIX Eco with recycled Carbon Black.

Pro carcasses 2026 – Gravity, Trail, and Race

Schwalbe's MTB lineup is divided into three carcass families: Gravity Pro for bike parks, aggressive enduro riding, and downhill with maximum puncture protection; Trail Pro for all-mountain and trail riding with a balanced mix of weight and protection; and Race Pro for XC racing, XC marathons, and road cycling with minimal rolling resistance and a three-layer sidewall construction. Introduced in 2026, this structure makes it easier to choose the right tire for your riding style.

Radial Carcass – A Schwalbe innovation

With the Radial Carcass, Schwalbe introduced a new approach to tire construction in 2024. Instead of running diagonally at the traditional 45° angle, the carcass threads run at a much flatter angle, almost radially from bead to bead. According to Schwalbe, this increases the contact area by around 30% at the same tire pressure, delivering noticeably more grip, comfort, and damping.

SmartGuard – The flat-proof belt in the Marathon Plus

SmartGuard is a patented 5 mm puncture protection belt. Made from a flexible special rubber compound, it can even resist thumbtacks and broken glass, making the tire one of the most puncture-resistant models on the market.

Pro One and Pro One Allroad – Souplesse meets Race Pro

With the Pro One, Schwalbe combines its Souplesse Carcass with two carcass layers under the tread, three sidewall layers, a V-Guard puncture protection belt, and the ADDIX Race compound. The result is a ride feel that's remarkably close to a classic tubular tire. The Pro One Allroad takes the concept a step further: based on the new Race Pro construction with a three-layer sidewall and an expanded V-Guard layer, it bridges the gap between road and gravel in 30, 35, and 40 mm widths.

Clik Valve and Aerothan – Rethinking valves and tubes

Clik Valve replaces the traditional screw-on mechanism with a simple click system: attach the pump head, inflate, and remove it. In tubeless setups, the standard delivers around 50% more airflow than traditional Presta valves, and existing valves can be upgraded with a conversion kit. Aerothan tubes take a similarly innovative approach. Made with TPU sourced 91% from BASF's ChemCycling process, they use oil derived from Schwalbe's own tire recycling program.

FAQ: Everything you need to know about Schwalbe tires

Where are Schwalbe tires made?

Schwalbe cycling tires are developed, tested, and managed at the company's headquarters in Reichshof near Cologne, Germany. Production takes place at Schwalbe's factory in Vietnam, which is operated as a joint venture with Korean manufacturer Hung-A. The rubber compounds are produced in Indonesia.

Which Schwalbe tire is best for gravel and all-road riding?

For paved roads with occasional gravel, the new Pro One Allroad in widths from 30 to 40 mm bridges the gap between road and gravel. For dedicated gravel racing, choose the RS Pro semi-slick, the R Pro all-rounder with its Boomerang tread pattern, or the RX Pro for rough terrain in widths up to 55 mm.

Can I retrofit Clik Valve to my current tube?

Yes. With Presta (SV) and Dunlop (DV) valves, you only need to replace the valve core, which can be done in seconds using the included tool. For Schrader (AV) valves, a screw-on adapter is available. Retrofitting is not approved for TPU tubes with a plastic valve stem.

Which Schwalbe tires are approved for fast e-bikes?

Tires for S-pedelecs up to 50 km/h require ECE-R75 approval. Schwalbe marks these models with the “E-50” label. Examples include the Marathon E-Plus, Marathon Plus in key sizes, and the Albert E-50. For pedelecs up to 25 km/h, the “E-25” label is sufficient.
