MountainBIKE 12/2018 - Test Winner! (Rating: Very Good!)
The SRAM Code R is a perfect blend of braking power, modulation, and the stability of the SRAM Guide brake—originally developed for trail and enduro use—which is now also used by some of the world’s best downhill racers. Yet this still doesn’t meet the need for more braking power and control to make the “impossible” possible. The all-new Code brake was developed for peak performance on the most demanding terrain. It is based on the Guide architecture, which has been equipped with a larger reservoir and four pistons of larger size on average. The Code was created to deliver massive braking power, predictable modulation, and incredibly effective heat dissipation on the steepest and toughest trails with the longest downhills.
The Code R features lever reach adjustment.
The new bleed port and internal fluid path make it easier and faster to push brake fluid through the caliper; the bleed adapter included with the S4 caliper connects to the bleed port and seals the system to minimize air contamination and fluid loss.
SRAM’s new brake lever design features a new bladder shape that helps regulate and reduce air bubbles. The bladder is specifically shaped to pump air out of the lever and direct the fluid exactly where it’s needed. The result is improved backpressure relief for reliable and consistent braking performance.
The stainless steel heat shield breaks the thermal link between the brake pads and the brake body, reducing the temperature of the brake fluid by approximately 20°C even under extreme test conditions.
With Matchmaker, you save weight and space on your handlebars. Matchmaker accommodates Avid brake levers, SRAM® trigger switches, and various RockShox adjustment knobs in the form of a lightweight and tidy clamp—making a dream come true for space-savers on handlebars worldwide. The system is available in two versions: Matchmaker™ X accommodates RockShox® XLoc and is compatible with XX and X0 brakes. The standard Matchmaker™ is also available and works with any split handlebar clamp and any RockShox® PushLoc system.
The brake fluid reservoir on SRAM’s current lever design is engineered for optimal performance and easy handling. The PiggyBack reservoir offers a simple and secure solution for checking brake fluid levels and also allows for ambidextrous lever mounting—so you can swap your levers on the handlebars and brake just like on a motorcycle.
The synchronization port on a hydraulic brake is the connection between the reservoir and the master cylinder bore. When the lever is actuated, a pot gasket passes through this area and closes the port, pressurizing the system. SRAM’s new TPC Plus system for closing the synchronization port features durable gaskets and an ultra-smooth master cylinder bore surface for reliable and consistent braking performance.
Some people prefer the immediate power transfer of a short lever travel. Others, however, prefer the feel of a longer lever travel. With the reach adjustment, you can determine the position where your fingers should be when the brakes are applied. This allows you to quickly and easily adjust the feel of your brakes to your needs without having to reposition the brake pads. In addition, both brake levers can be adjusted so that they feel exactly the same.
Sealed precision bearings on the twist grip ensure a smooth, precise grip movement and allow for smooth operation with just one finger.
SRAM’s DirectLink lever design delivers a solid, positive braking feel as soon as the brake lever is pulled—an uncompromising solution for precise control.
