Flattop technology is much more than just a striking appearance. It makes our 12-speed chain lighter, stronger, and more durable than anything that has come before. The Apex chain features the same construction as the Rival and Force chains, but with a polished gray finish.

PowerLock

SRAM’s chain engineers developed PowerLock as a tool-free, secure, and durable way to connect the chain. Although PowerLock does not require any particular tools for installation, each PowerLock can only be used once due to the tight tolerance range of a 10-, 11-, or 12-speed drivetrain.

Flattop

Imagine being able to increase the gear range of your drivetrain while shifting more smoothly and in smaller increments! Imagine doing so without any loss of efficiency and without having to replace the chain more often! SRAM’s unique Flattop chain link design makes all of this possible.

To offer a wider gear range with smaller steps, the chain must be narrower. With the Flattop chain, material has been added to the flat side of the outer plate to make each individual link more stable. The rivets, inner plates, and bushings are hard-chromed; this extends the chain’s service life and improves shifting performance even after many kilometers. In addition, the bushings on Flattop chains are larger, which is why they have a longer length and offer the same efficiency as 11-speed drivetrains. All of these technologies make it possible for the narrower 12-speed chains to have a length that is 36 percent longer than our 11-speed chains.
