Every component has been redesigned, refined, and optimized to give you that crucial edge—whether you’re breaking away from the peloton or sprinting to the finish on the Champs-Élysées.

The electronic Di2 components utilize wireless technology where it matters most to make shifting even faster and more reliable. The Hyperglide+ system, already well-known from the mtb segment, is also designed for smooth shifting, aiming to bring out maximum performance and the full potential of every road cyclist.

C50 Rim Profile – Aerodynamic All-Rounder

Reducing aerodynamic drag is the Dura-Ace WH-R9270-C50 wheelset’s specialty. Furthermore, the low overall weight and the resulting low rotating mass, combined with outstanding lateral and drive-side stiffness, result in a balanced ratio of the factors that significantly determine performance.

The 50 mm-deep wheels owe their aerodynamic efficiency in no small part to the sophisticated D2 rim design . Combined with the low weight—which makes the set even lighter than the predecessor C40 model—these wheels feel right at home almost anywhere, whether in time trials or criteriums, on hilly terrain, or when chasing personal bests.

However, the new generation of wheels not only excels with reduced drag but also offers technical refinements. Thanks to Direct Engagement technology, the freehub hubs provide outstanding drive stiffness, resulting in an even more direct feel in power transfer—a difference that is particularly noticeable during the initial acceleration phase. Meanwhile, the OPTBAL system , with its 2:1 spoke ratio, further enhances the rear wheel’s stiffness.

D2 Rim Design

Aerodynamic performance is influenced by wind direction. When developing the D2 rim profile, Shimano’s engineers took both headwinds and crosswinds into account to ensure optimal performance under real-world riding conditions.

Extensive prototype testing in the wind tunnel and on the road has shown that a wide rim shape and a deep rim bed offer the best performance under a wide range of conditions. At attack angles ranging from 0 to 15 degrees, the D2 rim design reduces drag more effectively than other rims with aerodynamic features. It also increases the wheel’s lateral stiffness and improves vertical tracking stability, resulting in greater control, comfort, and durability on the road.

OPTBAL

Wheelsets featuring the OPTBAL system use a 2:1 spoke ratio, resulting in twice as many spokes on the drive side as on the non-drive side. This technology counteracts the unbalanced tension caused, in particular, by increasing cassette widths on the right side. The OPTBAL design balances this spoke tension, thereby extending the life of the spokes. This ultimately improves the stiffness of the entire wheel.
