Your e-bike battery powers every mile of motor assistance, so the right battery makes all the difference to your range. Each electric bike battery is designed for a specific drive system, from Bosch and Shimano to MAHLE. After a few years of commuting, you might notice that your usual ride is starting to push the limits of a single charge. Or perhaps you're planning a ride in the Alps and want enough power in reserve for the final climbs. A new or additional battery can give you the range you need. Below, we cover the main options: frame batteries, integrated batteries, rear rack batteries and range extenders. Discover the right e-bike battery for your bike.

Frame battery, integrated battery or range extender – your options

Your bike frame dictates which battery type will fit. Each design differs in how it mounts, how easily you can remove it and where the weight sits on the bike. Your bike manufacturer specifies which type you need. Range extenders are different: They add extra capacity alongside your main battery rather than replacing it.

  • Frame batteries: These click into a lockable mount on the down tube, with options available from Bosch, Shimano and Giant. You can remove the battery in seconds and charge it indoors – especially convenient for commuters. The downside is that the battery remains visible and exposed to the weather.
  • Integrated batteries: Hidden completely inside the down tube, these batteries give modern e-bike frames a clean, streamlined look. Bosch, Shimano, Giant, SRAM, Specialized and MAHLE offer them in specific lengths and installation orientations. When it's time for a replacement, every detail of the battery designation needs to match.
  • Rear rack batteries: Mounted above the rear wheel, these batteries are available in our range from brands including Bosch and Giant. They leave the frame clear for the low step-through designs often found on city and trekking bikes. The trade-off is more weight higher up and toward the rear, which can make steering feel less responsive.
  • Range extenders: Usually about the size and shape of a water bottle, range extenders mount to the bottle cage bosses and connect to the main battery by cable. They add extra capacity for longer rides without requiring a battery swap. We carry options for Bosch, MAHLE, TQ, SRAM, Specialized and Giant. The downside: You'll give up a bottle cage mount.

Choosing the right e-bike battery

Getting the right battery comes down to a few key details. Most importantly, the battery, mount and motor must all belong to the same system generation. Check the following before you choose.

When should I replace my e-bike battery?

When your regular rides start pushing the limits of its remaining range. According to Bosch, lithium-ion e-bike batteries gradually lose capacity even when they aren't being used. Once you start noticing that loss in everyday riding, a new battery gives you full capacity again.

Range extender or second battery – which is better for longer rides?

A range extender stays mounted to the bike and adds capacity without requiring a battery swap. Your bike must be designed and approved for one, with the necessary connection and mount. A second battery works differently: Carry it with you and swap it for the empty main battery when needed. The better option depends on available capacity, additional weight and what your e-bike system supports.

How should I store a spare battery to help it last?

Bosch recommends storing the battery at 30 to 60 percent charge, away from flammable materials and in an area with a smoke detector. Choose a dry location with a suitable room temperature. Before a winter ride, keep the battery somewhere warm and install it shortly before you set off. We also carry battery cases and fire-resistant bags for storage and transport.
