SON Front wheel for Brompton folding bikes

SON prefers to supply complete wheelsets, as lacing wheels with SON XS hubs requires some experience. The wheelsets with Ryde Snyper rims are even lighter and more elegant than those with original Brompton rims. The front wheels are laced by hand, carefully tensioned, and trued. Optimal spoke tension ensures high stability and durability of the wheel.

The StVO-approved hub dynamo achieves an efficiency of 60% (0.7 watts) even at a riding speed of 15 km/h. The weight of less than 400g ensures that the bike is no heavier than a model equipped with a conventional front hub and friction dynamo. Due to the short flange spacing, the lateral stiffness of the wheels is also lower than that of hubs with standard geometry.

The Heart of the System—the SON XS hub dynamo

This version of the SON XS hub dynamo is optimized for the narrow forks of Brompton folding bikes. The small and lightweight hub dynamo features side slots instead of spoke holes. Straight, non-offset spokes—like those found in system wheelsets—are inserted into these slots. The XS hub features a semi-radial lacing pattern, which means the spokes run at a slight angle when the wheel is built. This makes the wheel more elegant and durable, as it eliminates the bending moment in the spoke arc.
