The familiar products are being replaced by TPU inner tubes, as TPU offers many advantages over black rubber inner tubes. But what exactly is TPU? Thermoplastics are plastics that deform when heated and harden when they cool. Are road bike TPU inner tubes better than classic butyl bicycle inner tubes?

Definitely. TPU inner tubes are significantly lighter than butyl inner tubes. While a road bike tire made from the traditional material weighs around 120 grams, a comparably wide TPU inner tube weighs between 25 and 40 grams (including the valve). Incidentally, even when compared to a tubeless system that uses between 30 and 60 millimeters per gram of tire sealant plus the valve, the TPU inner tube comes out ahead in terms of weight.
