The DT Swiss 240 is built around the Swiss wheel specialist’s Ratchet technology. Its history dates back to 1995, when DT Swiss acquired the exclusive license for the Hügi Ratchet System and launched its own road and MTB hubs. The basic principle remains the same today: toothed ratchets engage simultaneously across a large contact area to distribute loads evenly. DT Swiss continues to develop its 240 hubs specifically for road and MTB use, with different freehub systems tailored to each application. Whether you’re building your own wheelset or replacing a high-end hub, you can choose a DT Swiss 240 hub to match your riding discipline, spoke interface and drivetrain standard.

Why choose DT Swiss 240 hubs?

DT Swiss 240 hubs combine proven Ratchet technology with dedicated options for road and MTB. Choose the right hub for your wheel build.

  • Proven Ratchet reliability: Simultaneous tooth engagement distributes loads across a large contact area.
  • A freehub system for your setup: Different Ratchet systems let you tailor weight and engagement characteristics to road or MTB use.
  • Easy to service: EXP simplifies disassembly, while DEG makes bearing replacement possible without special tools.
  • Flexible wheel builds: Road, MTB, Classic and Straightpull options give you plenty of choice when configuring your wheels.

DT Swiss 240 hubs at a glance

The 240 road hubs focus on the lightweight Ratchet EXP system. MTB hubs give you a choice of Ratchet systems, allowing you to prioritize weight or engagement characteristics depending on how you ride. The 240 Hybrid rounds out the range for the higher loads generated by e-MTBs.

DT Swiss 240 Road

DT Swiss 240 Road hubs focus on low weight and direct power transfer. Ratchet EXP 36 integrates one ratchet with the threaded ring, reducing the number of components and increasing bearing spacing. This gives the road hub a lightweight construction while retaining the proven functionality of the Ratchet system.

  • Ratchet EXP 36: Lightweight freehub system with 36 teeth for direct power transfer.
  • Classic or Straightpull: Choose the spoke interface that matches your planned wheel build.

DT Swiss 240 MTB

DT Swiss 240 MTB hubs give you more options for matching freehub engagement to your riding style. Ratchet EXP is available with 36 or 54 teeth and prioritizes low weight. Ratchet DEG uses 90 teeth for a 4° engagement angle. Depending on your setup, DEG DF adds a defined amount of freehub rotation to reduce pedal kickback on full-suspension bikes.

  • Ratchet EXP 36/54: Weight-focused system with two engagement options.
  • Ratchet DEG 90: 4° engagement angle for minimal freehub movement before power transfer.
  • DEG DF: 0°, 10° or 20° of freehub rotation to tune pedal kickback and suspension behavior.

DT Swiss 240 technologies

All DT Swiss 240 hubs share the same core principle: ratchets with a large tooth contact area. Ratchet EXP uses a lightweight design with fewer components, while Ratchet DEG delivers an especially small engagement angle. On the DT Swiss 240 Hybrid, Ratchet EXP OS adapts the concept to the higher loads generated by an e-MTB drivetrain.

Ratchet EXP

Ratchet EXP is DT Swiss’s lightest freehub system. One ratchet and the threaded ring form a single unit, reducing the number of individual components. Wider bearing spacing reduces the load on the bearings and increases axle stiffness. The 240 Road hubs use EXP with 36 teeth, while MTB hubs are available with 36 or 54 teeth.

Ratchet DEG and DEG DF

Ratchet DEG uses 90 teeth across particularly large ratchets. This reduces the engagement angle to 4°, so power transfer resumes after very little freehub movement. Depending on the setup, DEG DF adds 0°, 10° or 20° of freehub rotation. This helps reduce the effect of chain forces on the suspension and lets you tune the system for different types of MTB riding.

Ratchet EXP OS on the DT Swiss 240 Hybrid

Ratchet EXP OS adapts the lightweight EXP design to the higher loads generated by an e-MTB. Its 30 teeth engage across a wide contact area, while larger bearings and a larger threaded ring distribute the additional forces across a greater area. A purpose-built axle and hardened steel freehub body complete the system.
