WD-40 traces its origins back to 1953, when the Rocket Chemical Company was tasked with developing a formula that could displace water and protect metal from corrosion. The name WD-40 comes from "Water Displacement," while the number 40 refers to the fortieth attempt that finally produced the successful formula.
Originally developed to protect against moisture and rust, the product quickly proved useful for many other applications. Growing demand led Norm Larsen to begin selling WD-40 in aerosol cans in 1958, before the WD-40 Company was officially established in 1969.
Today, WD-40 is a global company whose products are available in 176 countries. Alongside its iconic Multi-Use Product, the range now includes specialist cleaners, lubricants, contact sprays, and maintenance products for bicycles, motorcycles, workshops, and industrial applications.
