Reflective cycling clothing – stay visible day and night
Visibility means freedom: reflective cycling clothing and smart bike lights help keep you visible after dark, from daily commutes to evening rides.
Read moreWhy is visibility on the road so important?
The severity of road accidents is 2 to 3 times higher after dark than during the day. Cyclists are affected disproportionately, often because drivers simply don't see them until it's too late. Good bike lights help you see the road ahead, but they don't automatically provide enough reflective surface area to make you visible to others. Combining reflective cycling gear and illuminated elements on your bike helps make sure you can be seen.
The risk:
- Drivers often don't see cyclists until the last moment
- Darkness, rain and fog make visibility even worse
The solution:
- Reflective materials on clothing and gear
- Active lighting that makes you even more visible

How reflective cycling clothing works
Reflective elements work through retroreflection: tiny glass beads or microprisms in strips, prints or fibers direct headlight beams back toward the light source. Instead of simply appearing slightly brighter, you stand out clearly when illuminated by vehicle headlights. Alongside traditional reflective strips on sleeves, leg openings and back panels, many manufacturers now use reflective prints that blend discreetly into the design but become highly visible when light hits them. They're often combined with neon colors such as high-vis yellow or orange, which stand out in low light even before reflective elements come into play.
For everyday riding, hi-vis cycling clothing such as a reflective jacket plus one or two additional items like shoe covers or a cap is often enough. If you regularly ride on poorly lit rural roads, consider adding a backpack or bike bags with large reflective panels. The larger the reflective area, the sooner you're likely to be seen.
Smart safety for your daily commute
From your morning commute to an after-work ride, electronic lighting can do more than simply light up when you regularly ride in the dark. Radar tail lights and helmets with integrated rear or brake lights add another layer of visibility alongside reflective cycling apparel.
If you ride at the same time every day regardless of the weather or season, smart lighting is a useful addition to reflective clothing. It doesn't replace it, though: passive reflective surfaces don't need a battery and are always ready to work.
Tip: Always combine active lighting with passive reflective elements on your clothing and bike. This gives you the best possible visibility in different riding situations.
Electronic safety upgrades: radar and helmet lights
Add electronic safety features to reflective clothing and passive accessories for even greater visibility:
- Radar tail lights: detect vehicles approaching from behind and alert you early with audio or visual warnings
- Bike helmets with lights: combine head protection and added visibility in one piece of gear

How radar tail lights work
A sensor integrated into the tail light detects traffic approaching from behind and can alert you on your bike computer, for example. This means you can spot an approaching vehicle before you hear it. It's particularly useful on rural roads without bike lanes, giving you more time to react.
How helmet lights work
A light directly on your helmet complements your regular tail light at head height, where it's easy for drivers to see. Some models use a motion sensor to detect braking and automatically increase brightness. Important: A helmet light complements the legally required tail light on your bike – it doesn't replace it.
If you want reliable lighting without worrying about batteries, retrofit your bike with a dynamo hub for continuous, low-maintenance lighting.
What other reflective cycling accessories do you need for your bike?
The right accessories make both you and your bike easier to see from different angles:
- Bike reflectors (spokes, frame, rims): reflect headlights from the side and improve lateral visibility for greater 360° visibility
- Tires with reflective strips: continuous side visibility without adding separate reflectors
- Helmet covers: pack down small enough to fit in any bag and are ready to use as soon as it gets dark or foggy
Combining reflective materials, accessories and electronic lighting helps keep you visible from every angle.
