FOX Factory has been developing air suspension for decades. Bob Fox built his first Air Shox in 1974, followed by the first FLOAT-style rear shock for bikes in the 1990s. Today, FLOAT refers to the air-spring technology used across FOX fork ranges, while the name also appears directly in its rear-shock lineup. Air pressure, spring curve and damping let you tune sensitivity, support and composure at speed. The range covers everything from lightweight, responsive XC setups to gravity suspension built with more in reserve for hard descents.

What sets FOX FLOAT suspension apart

FLOAT lets you tune more than just spring firmness. You can adjust sensitivity, support and progression to suit your weight, bike and riding style.

  • Easy setup: Adjust air pressure to set sag and spring firmness for your weight and preferences.
  • Tunable spring curve: Volume spacers let you adjust progression without changing the spring.
  • Built for different demands: XC and gravity models prioritize weight, support and tuning differently.

FOX FLOAT forks and shocks at a glance

FOX uses FLOAT air-spring technology across its fork ranges from the 32 to the 40. At the rear, the FLOAT shock family stretches from the lightweight FLOAT SL to the gravity-focused FLOAT X2.

FOX Factory FLOAT forks for gravel, XC, trail and gravity

As trails get faster and rougher, the demands on the chassis increase. FOX offers forks ranging from lightweight gravel and XC setups all the way to downhill.

  • FOX 32: Lightweight chassis for gravel and marathon XC, with an emphasis on low weight and efficiency.
  • FOX 34: For XC, downcountry and trail, with more stiffness and capability than the 32.
  • FOX 36: Trail and all-mountain fork built for higher loads and more technical descents.
  • FOX 38: Enduro fork for more travel, high speeds and hard hits.
  • FOX 40: Dual-crown fork for downhill and bike park riding with a full gravity focus.

FOX FLOAT shocks for XC, trail, all-mountain and gravity

Your rear shock plays a major role in both climbing efficiency and control on fast, rough descents. The FLOAT shock range runs from lightweight XC options to gravity-focused suspension.

  • FOX FLOAT SL: Lightweight and compact for XC and downcountry, with a focus on pedaling efficiency and traction.
  • FOX FLOAT: Built for trail bikes that need more capability while retaining a compact design.
  • FOX FLOAT X: For aggressive trail and all-mountain riding, with greater stability under load and more tuning options.
  • FOX FLOAT X2: For enduro and downhill when you want to fine-tune support and damping to the track and your riding style.

FOX FLOAT suspension technologies

FOX helped establish air springs as a core part of modern mountain bike suspension and continues to develop the technology today. What started as an air spring has evolved into a highly tunable system that combines sensitivity, controlled support and, increasingly, electronic adjustment. EVOL is a core part of FLOAT technology: its enlarged negative air chamber reduces breakaway force for a more sensitive response to small bumps. Volume spacers give you additional control over progression.

GRIP SL, GRIP X and GRIP X2 fork dampers

The GRIP damper determines how much control you have over damping adjustments. GRIP SL prioritizes low weight and efficiency for XC. GRIP X gives you more tuning options for trail and all-mountain riding. GRIP X2 is aimed at enduro and downhill, giving you greater control over compression and rebound to match the track and your riding style.

Live Valve Neo on the FOX FLOAT X

On changing terrain, you want efficient support on climbs without giving up open suspension performance on descents. Live Valve Neo handles that transition automatically on the FLOAT X. Sensors at the front and rear wheels detect the terrain and automatically control compression damping. That means you don’t have to reach for a lever every time the trail switches between climbing and descending.
