The Maxxis Minion DHR II casings at a glance
The DHR II uses the same tread across the range, while four casing options let you match protection and weight to your riding. Choose EXO for light trail riding, EXO+ for aggressive trails and e-MTB use, DoubleDown for hard enduro racing, or DH for downhill racing and bike park riding.
- EXO: The lightest option for trail and all-mountain riding. A tightly woven EXO protection layer reinforces the sidewalls against cuts and abrasion without adding unnecessary weight.
- EXO+: A 60 TPI casing combines EXO sidewall protection with a small butyl insert at the bead, adding protection where the tire meets the rim.
- DoubleDown: Built for enduro racing, hard trails, and e-MTBs. Two 120 TPI layers plus a butyl insert at the bead add sidewall stability and pinch-flat protection, while staying lighter than the Downhill casing.
- Downhill: The toughest DHR II casing, built for the bike park and downhill racing. Two 60 TPI casing layers plus a butyl insert provide high stability and protection against hard impacts.
The technology behind the Maxxis Minion DHR II
The DHR II gets its traction from three key technologies: its rear-specific tread, 3C compound system, and Wide Trail profile. Together, they balance grip, control, and rolling efficiency on the trail.
Rear-specific tread design
The DHR II borrows its shoulder knobs from the Minion DHF and widens them for extra support and biting grip when you lean into a corner. Ramped, paddle-shaped knobs sit in the center: the ramps help the tire roll smoothly, while pronounced braking edges dig in when you slow down. Fine siping in the center knobs adds flexibility and boosts traction. The result is a single tread that balances pedaling, braking, and cornering traction.
3C Triple Compound
The 3C system combines three rubber compounds: a firmer base layer plus two softer compounds in the outer tread for traction and cornering grip. 3C MaxxTerra balances grip and durability for enduro and trail riding. 3C MaxxGrip prioritizes maximum traction on wet terrain and roots and for downhill riding, at the cost of faster wear. Dual is the more affordable entry-level compound.
Wide Trail (WT)
The Wide Trail profile is tuned for modern, wide rims. The 2.40- and 2.50-inch versions are built for rims with 30 to 35 mm internal width. The benefit: the tire keeps its round, supportive shape instead of squaring off on wide rims. That gives you consistent grip from the center to the shoulder knobs and predictable cornering.
